Methyl 3-(2-formyl-3-hydroxyphenoxy)methylbenzoate (Example 18) (500 mg, 0.00175 M) was dissolved in ethanol (5 ml) and 1 N sodium hydroxide solution (5 ml) and stirred at room temperature (21/2 hr). The solution was diluted with water and acidified with concentrated hydrochloric acid with cooling and the solid produced filtered off and washed with water to give 3-(2-formyl-3-hydroxyphenoxy)methylbenzoic acid, m.p. 209°-211° C. from ethanol/water.
