Procedure

Sodium cyanide (2.4 g) and 0.8 g of benzyl triethyl ammonium chloride were added to 30 ml of dimethyl formamide, and with stirring, a solution of 5.6 g of (1-chloroethyl)-4-(2-chloromethylbenzyl)benzene in 10 ml of dimethyl formamide was added. The mixture was stirred at 40° C. for 1 hour and then at 70° C. for 20 hours. After the reaction, the reaction mixture was cooled, and 70 ml of water was added. The mixture was extracted with ether. The ethereal layer was washed with water, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and distilled off to remove the ether. The resulting pale yellow oily substance was chromatographed on a silica gel column using benzene as an eluent. From the eluate, 3.4 g of (1-cyanoethyl)-4-(2-cyanomethylbenzyl)benzene was obtained as a colorless liquid. This compound crystallized by stimulating the reactor wall through addition of n-hexane. Recrystallization from a mixture of ether and n-hexane afforded colorless needle-like crystals having a melting point of 61° to 64° C.
