4-(4-Fluoro-3-nitrophenyl)-1,5-dihydro-3-methyl-2H-pyrrol-2-one (6.5g, 28 mmol) and 2-methylimidazole (6.8 g, 83 mmol) are combined in dimethylsulfoxide (50 mL) and the mixture is heated to 50° C. under a nitrogen atmosphere for 4 hr. The mixture is then cooled to room temperature, and water is added to give a precipitate. The mixture is kept cold for 1 hr, and the precipitate is collected by filtration, washed with water, and air-dried to provide the title compound.
