Procedure
A mixture of 3-(4-methoxyphenoxy)quinoline (2.6 g), acetic acid (20 ml) and hydrobromic acid (20 ml of 48%) was boiled under reflux for 5 hours. The solution was concentrated under reduced pressure, poured onto ice and the resultant precipitate was collected by filtration to give 3-(4-hydroxyphenoxy)quinoline as a dark brown solid (2.4 g), mp 250° C.
