To a solution of a 5 g. (34 mmoles) of 3-methyl-4-[N′-(2-ethoxycarbonyl-1-acetylethylidene)hydrazino]benzoic acid in 25 ml. of ethanol and 25 ml. of water was added with stirring 34.3 ml. of a 1 M sodium carbonate solution. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 24 hours. The resulting mixture was acidified to pH 3 with 6 M hydrochloric acid and the resulting solid was collected by filtration, washed with water and dried. The 3-methyl-4-(3-acetyl-5-oxo-2-pyrazolin-1-yl)benzoic acid has melting point of >250° C.
