A solution of 5.0 g of (E)-2(R)-[1(S)-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-4-phenyl-3-butenyl]-4-methylvaleric acid in 150 ml of iso-propyl alcohol was hydrogenated in the presence of 0.500 g of 5% palladium-on-carbon for 1 hour. The mixture was filtered and evaporated to give 4.8 g of 2(R)-[1(S)-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-4-phenylbutyl]-4-methylvaleric acid in the form of a yellow oil.
