The trienone from (a) (1 gm) in ethanol (50 mls) at 0° was treated with 10% aqueous sodium hydroxide (0.25 ml) and 30% aqueous H2O2 (2.5 ml). The mixture was stored at 5° overnight and then the resulting epoxide was filtered off, washed with aqueous alcohol and dried to afford the title compound (0.86 mgs). Recrystallization from ethanol gave colourless needles, melting point 107°-109°.
