A mixture of 31 g of 2,3-dichloro-4-hydroxy-2',3'-dimethylbenzophenone and 30.5 g of hydroxylamine hydrochloride in 250 ml of pyridine is refluxed for about one week. The pyridine is evaporated in vacuo and the residue is partitioned between ethyl acetate and 5% HCl. The ethylacetate extract is washed, dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated. Trituration with hexane gives 2,3-dichloro-4-hydroxy-2',3'-dimethylbenzophenone oxime.
