A mixture of 39.5 g of 2,3-dichloro-4-methoxy-4'-fluorobenzophenone and 160 g of pyridine hydrochloride is heated at 200° C. for one hour. The reaction mixture is poured into ice water with stirring and a precipitate forms. The precipitate is filtered and dried for about 18 hours to yield 2,3-dichloro-4-hydroxy-4'-fluorobenzophenone.
