A solution of 10.1 g of p-[trans-4-(2-methoxyvinyl)cyclohexyl]benzonitrile in 200 ml of tetrahydrofuran/2N hydrochloric acid (vol. 4:1) was heated to reflux for 1 hour while stirring. The mixture was subsequently partitioned three times in diethyl ether/water. The organic extracts were washed twice with water, dried over magnesium sulphate, filtered and evaporated, there being obtained 9.8 g of 2-[trans-4-(p-cyanophenyl)cyclohexyl]acetaldehyde as a light yellowish, crystalline residue.
