19.3 g (0.11 mol) of 5-formyl-2-acetylcyclohexane-1,3-dione were introduced into 200 ml of distilled water and, at room temperature, 14.7 g (0.13 mol) of hydroxylamine-O-sulfonic acid were added. The mixture was then stirred at room temperature for 17 h. The precipitate was filtered off with suction, washed with water and dried. 11.5 g (61% of theory) of 3,5-dioxo-4-acetylcyclohexanecarbonitrile were obtained (melting point 94 to 97° C.).
