Procedure
A solution of ethyl 2,6-dimethyl-4-[(2'-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)biphenyl-4-yl)methoxy]pyridine-3-carboxylate hydrochloride (240 mg) in 2M aqueous sodium hydroxide (5 ml) was heated under reflux for 2 hours. The solution was cooled and acidified to pH 3 with 6M hydrochloric acid. The precipitated solid was collected by filtration and triturated with hot methanol to give 2,6-dimethyl-4-[(2'-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)biphenyl-4-yl)methoxy]pyridine-3-carboxylic acid (67 mg), as a white powder, m.p. 237° C.; NMR (d6 -DMSO, d4 -acetic acid): 2.45(s,3H), 2.55(s,3H), 5.3(s,2H), 7.1(s,1H), 7.2(d,2H), 7.4(d,2H), 7.4-7.75 (complex m,4H); mass spectrum (DMSO/GLY): 400 (M-H)-, 166; microanalysis, found: C,64.5; H,4.5; N,17.0%; C22H19N5O3.0.5H2O requires: C,64.5; H,4.9; N,17.1%.
