To 16 g of 3-methoxy-5-methylthio-4-propoxybenzyl chloride in 100 ml of dry DMF was added 5 g (0.10 mole) sodium cyanide. The mixture was stirred for about 48 hours at rom temperature under N2. The solution was filtered, and the filtrate was concentrated under vacuum. The residue was purified by flash column chromatography to yield 14.5 g of 3-methoxy-5-methylthio-4-propoxyphenyl acetonitrile as an oil. (95% yield).
