A 100 ml methanol solution containing 2.26 g (1.00×10-2 mols) of N-((S)-α-methylbenzyl)nicotinamide was charged into a 250 ml round bottom flask equipped with condenser, addition funnel, drying tube, nitrogen purge and magnetic stirrer. To this stirred reaction mixture was added, dropwise over a 10 minute interval, 50 ml of a methanol solution containing 1.53 g (1.00×10-2 mols) of chloromethylstyrene. The solution was stirred for 24 hours at 25° C., then was concentrated under vacuum to afford solid which was recrystallized from methanol to yield 3.40 g (8.98×10-3 mols) of product.
