To a stirred solution of ethyl 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetate (30 g, 0.16 mol) in acetonitrile (300 mL) was added K2CO3 (114.9 g, 0.83 mol) and 2-(chloromethyl) quinoline (42.7 g, 0.19 mol) at RT. The reaction mixture was refluxed for 16 h. The reaction mixture was then filtered and the solid residue was extracted with EtOAc (2×100 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with water, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo to afford ethyl 2-(4-(quinolin-2-ylmethoxy)phenyl)acetate (50 g, 93.4%) as a solid.
