To a 0° C. solution of 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethanone (3.0 g, 0.01 mol) in acetonitrile (60 mL) under an inert atmosphere was added potassium carbonate (3.4 g, 0.02 mol) followed by benzyl chloride (1.8 mL, 0.014 mol). The reaction mixture was brought to 80° C. and stirred for 2 h. The reaction was quenched with cold water, filtered and the filtrate was extracted with DCM (2×100 mL). The combined organic layers were dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo to afford 1-(4-(benzyloxy)phenyl)-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethanone (1.0 g, 24%) as a white solid.
