To a stirred solution of 5-(4-(benzyloxy)phenyl)-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,2-dimethylfuran-3(2H)-one (1.0 g, 3.0 mmol) in methanol (50 mL) was added Pd(OH)2 (150 mg, 1.07 mmol) at RT under an inert atmosphere. The reaction mixture was stirred under an atmosphere of hydrogen for 1 h. The reaction mixture was filtered through a pad of Celite® and the filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to afford 5-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,2-dimethylfuran-3(2H)-one (600 mg, 64%) as a pale yellow solid
