To a stirred solution of 2-methoxy-5-(4-methyl-4-(trimethylsilyloxy)pent-2-ynoyl)benzonitrile (1.2 g, 3.01 mmol) in DCM (20 mL) was added PTSA (1.08 g, 5.60 mmol) at RT. The reaction mixture was stirred for 30 minutes and diluted with water (5 mL). The combined organic layers were then washed with a saturated NaHCO3 solution and water, dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and then concentrated in vacuo to afford 5-(4-hydroxy-4-methylpent-2-ynoyl)-2-methoxybenzonitrile (0.9 g, 97%) as a semi-solid.
