To a stirred solution of 5-(4-hydroxy-4-methylpent-2-ynoyl)-2-methoxybenzonitrile (0.9 g, 3.70 mmol) in ethanol (10 mL), a solution of diethyl amine (0.38 mL, 3.70 mmol) in EtOH (2.0 mL) was added dropwise at RT and the reaction mixture was stirred for additional 1 h. The ethanol was then was removed, and the mixture diluted with EtOAc (40 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with water (5 mL) and brine (10 mL), dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to afford 5-(5,5-dimethyl-4-oxo-4,5-dihydrofuran-2-yl)-2-methoxybenzonitrile (0.9 g, 100%) as a yellow semi solid.
