To a mixture consisting of 4.16 g. of N-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-seryl-L-tyrosine methyl ester [for the preparation of this compound see J. Am. Chem. Soc., 76, 5076 (1954)], 30 ml. of methanol, and 416 mg. of 5% palladium-on-barium sulfate is added 8.7 ml. of methanol containing 400 mg. of hydrogen chloride, and hydrogen is passed over the stirred mixture for 75 minutes. The mixture is then filtered to remove the catalyst, and the filtrate is evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure to give a solid residue of L-seryl-L-tyrosine methyl ester hydrochloride, which is suitable for use without further purification.
