1.5 g of N-methylpiperazine are added to a stirred suspension of 2 g of 2-chloro-5-oxo-6-carbethoxy-8-methyl-5,8-dihydro-pyrido(2,3-d)pyrimidine in 20 cm3 of absolute ethanol. The reaction takes place with evolution of heat. After standing for 2 hours at room temperature, the solvent is evaporated in vacuo, the residue is taken up in water and the precipitate is filtered off, washed, dried in vacuo and recrystallised from benzene: 1.4 g (58%) of 2-(4'-methyl-piperazino)-5-oxo-6-carbethoxy-8-methyl-5,8-dihydro-pyrido(2,3-d)pyrimidine are obtained.
