To 6-phenylnicotinic acid N′-(4-methoxybutyryl)hydrazide (6.06 g) was added phosphorus oxychloride (100 ml), and stirred at 100° C. for 3 hours. After the reaction solution was cooled to ambient temperature, the solution was concentrated under reduced pressure. To the resulting residue was added aqueous 1 mol/liter sodium hydroxide solution under ice cooling, and extracted with chloroform. After the organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent: n-hexane/ethyl acetate=3/1 to 1/1 to 1/2 to 1/5), and washed with a mixture solvent of n-hexane and ethyl acetate, to afford the entitled compound 5-[5-(3-methoxypropyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl]-2-phenylpyridine 3.72 g, 65%).
