To a solution of (3S,4S)-benzyl 3-(tert-butoxycarbonylamino)-4-hydroxypiperidine-1-carboxylate in dichloromethane (0.13 M) was added triethylamine (1.5 equiv.) followed by methanesulfonyl chloride (1.3 equiv.). The reaction was allowed to stir at room temperature for 15 h. The solution was then quenched with saturated NaHCO3, extracted with dichloromethane, dried with sodium sulfate, and concentrated to give the crude product in >95% yield. LCMS (m/z): 428.9/328.9 (MH+), LC Rt=3.81 min.
