Procedure

5-Ethyl-3-methyl-6H-thiazolo[4,5-d]pyrimidin-7-one-2-thione (9.5g, 41.8 mmole) from Example 108 was suspended in approximately 500ml of 4N sodium hydroxide solution. The resultant mixture was refluxed for 2 to 4 hours, followed by cooling at approximately 4° C. for about hours. The mixture was slowly acidified with concentrated hydrochloric acid; the solid was separated by filtration and dried, providing 6.6g (85%) of 2-ethyl-5-mercapto-6-methylamino-3H-pyrimidin-4-one. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectral analyses confirmed the structural assignment.
