Procedure
Sodium hydroxide (1.42 g) in water (17.75 ml) was added to a vigorously stirred solution of methyl 5-(4-(1,1-dimethylethyl)phenylfuran-2-carboxylate (4.579 g) in tetrahydrofuran (100 ml) and stirred at room temperature for 17 hours, the solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue dissolved in 10% sodium hydrogen carbonate solution (200 ml) then acidified with 2 M hydrochloric acid. The mixture was extracted with diethyl ether (3 x 200 ml), the ether washed with water and dried (MgSO4) The solvent was removed in vacuo to give 5-(4-(1,1-dimethylethyl)phenylfuran-2-carboxylic acid, m.p. 230° C.
