3.54 ml of 48% hydrobromic acid was added to 500 mg (1.86 mmol) of 2-benzyl-5,6-dimethoxyisoindoline, and the mixture was refluxed for 3 hours under stirring. The precipitated crystals were collected from the reaction solution, and washed with water and acetone to obtain 578 mg (yield: 96.5%) of the above identified compound as colorless prism crystals.
