Procedure
A suspension of Example 17E (1.85 g, 6.37 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (32 mL) was treated with sodium hydroxide solution (1.0 N, 16 mL, 16 mmol) and then stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. The mixture was concentrated in vacuo to remove the tetrahydrofuran and the mixture was diluted with water and cooled to 0° C. The solution was acidified to pH 7 by addition of 1 N aqueous hydrochloric acid solution. The mixture was extracted with dichloromethane (2×) and the combined extracts were dried (Na2SO4), filtered and the filtrate was concentrated in vacuo. These procedures afforded the product (1.14 g, 84%) as a light beige solid.
