Procedure
In a two necked flask cooled in an ice bath and under argon atmosphere, dimethyl(2S)-2-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)butanedioate (19 mmol, 4.0 g) was dissolved in 10 ml of dry THF. LiBH4 (57 mmol 1.14 g) was added portionwise and the reaction was stirred for 6 hours at 0° C. When the reaction was completed, it was quenched by addition of 2M HCl and Ethyl Acetate (30 ml). The aqueous layer was extracted with ethyl acetate 2 times and the combined organic layers were dried, filtered and evaporated. The crude residue was purified by chromatography on silica gel (eluent: DCM/MeOH:95/5) to give the product as a colourless oil (2.8 g, 95% yield, e.e. %=97.5).
