Procedure

To a solution of (cis-4-hydroxycyclohexyl)acetonitrile (2.50 g, 18.0 mmol) in dichloromethane (80 mL) at 0° C. was added 1H-imidazole (1.47 g, 21.6 mmol), triphenylphosphine (5.65 g, 21.6 mmol), and followed by iodine (5.47 g, 21.6 mmol) in several portions over a period of 45 min. The resulting suspension was gradually allowed to warm to room temperature. After stirring at room temperature overnight, the mixture was partitioned between Et2O (100 mL) and water (100 mL). The organic layer was washed with saturated Na2SO3 solution and brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated. The residue was purified by flash chromatography (0-20% ethyl acetate/hexanes) to give the desired product as white solid (1.0 g, 22%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 4.04 (m, 1H), 2.50-2.38 (m, 2H), 2.24 (d, J=6.1 Hz, 2H), 1.99 (m, 2H), 1.77 (m, 3H), 1.22 (m, 2H) ppm.
