Procedure

To a solution of 2-benzylhexahydropyrano[3,4-c]pyrrol-4(2H)-one (2.82 g) in THF (70 mL) was added LiBH4 (0.40 g) at 0° C. under N2. The reaction mixture was stirred for 7 h at room temperature and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was dissolved in MeOH (50 mL) and heated to reflux for 16 h. The mixture was concentrated in vacuo and redissolved in EtOAc (100 mL), then washed with water followed by brine, dried over anhydrous Na2SO4 and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound (2.31 g, 80.62%). The compound was characterized by the following spectroscopic data: MS (ESI, pos. ion) m/z: 236.3 (M+1).
