A solution of 2,8-dimethyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-pyrido[4,3-b]indole (100 mg, 0.499 mmol), 7-bromoisoquinoline (155 mg, 0.748 mmol), K3PO4 (317 mg, 1.495 mmol), CuI (9 mg, 0.047 mmol) and L-Proline (11 mg, 0.095 mmol) in dry DMF (2 mL) was stirred at 150° C. for 16 h. The reaction mixture was diluted with water and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford crude material, which was purified by reverse phase HPLC to yield 5-(isoquinolin-7-yl)-2,8-dimethyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-pyrido[4,3-b]indole as a yellow solid. 1H NMR (TFA salt, CD3OD) d (ppm): 9.57 (s, 1H), 8.6 (d, 1H), 8.37 (m, 2H), 8.2 (d, 1H), 8.0 (d, 1H), 7.4 (s, 1H), 7.21 (d, 1H), 7.1 (d, 1H), 4.76 (m, 1H), 4.42 (m, 1H), 3.82 (m, 1H), 3.61 (m, 1H), 3.21 (s, 3H), 3.1 (m, 2H), 2.42 (s, 3H).
