Procedure

A mixture of 4-n-octylaniline (0.21 g; 1 mmol), BrCH2CN (0.156 mmol; 1.3 mmol) and K2CO3 (0.28 g; 2 mmol) in anhydrous CH3CN (3 ml) was stirred overnight at ˜60° C. under N2, then concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was partitioned between CH2Cl2 (20 ml) and H2O (10 ml). The organic phase was dried over anhydrous MgSO4 and filtered. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by crystallization from hexane to give the title compound (0.18 g; 74%) as creamy solid. 1H-NMR (CDCl3) 7.06 (d, 2H, J=8.48 Hz); 6.63 (d, 2H, J=8.48 Hz); 4.06 (d, 2H, J=5.75 Hz); 3.83 (broad m, 1H); 2.51 (t, 2H, J=7.92 Hz); 1.55 (m, 3H); 1.27 (m, 10H); 0.86 (t, 3H, J=6.87 Hz).
