Procedure

To a solution of C6 (338 mg, 1.52 mmol) in methanol (5 mL) was added 2-aminoethanol (139 mg, 2.28 mmol) followed by acetic acid (89 μL, 1.55 mmol). The reaction was stirred at reflux for 2 hours, then cooled to 0° C. Sodium borohydride (115 mg, 3.04 mmol) was added and the mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature. The reaction was diluted with ethyl acetate, quenched with water, and then extracted three times with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers were dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo to provide the crude title compound as a liquid. Yield: 362 mg, 1.35 mmol, 89%. This was presumed to be a mixture of stereoisomers. LCMS m/z 268.3 (M+1). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3), characteristic peaks: δ 7.22-7.28 (m, 2H), 7.10-7.16 (m, 2H), 3.63 (dd, J=5.3, 5.1 Hz, 2H), 2.75 (dd, J=5.3, 5.1 Hz, 2H).
