A stirred solution of 1-benzyl-3-pyrrolidinone (8.36 g, 47.7 mmol) in dry THF (100 mL) was cooled to −70° C. and 3 M MeMgBr in ether (30 mL, 90 mmol) was added over 5 min. The cooling bath was allowed to expire and the mixture was stirred overnight at rt. The mixture was poured into satd aq NH4Cl (300 mL) and extracted with ether (3×100 mL). The combined organic extracts were washed with brine (50 mL), dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to leave 1-benzyl-3-methylpyrrolidin-3-ol (8.98 g) as an oil.
