(S)-4-Amino-4-phenylbutyric acid sodium salt (1.48 g) was added in portions to a suspension of lithium aluminum hydride (1.00 g) in THF (100 ml). The mixture was stirred at 50° C. for 4 hours and then admixed successively with water (1 ml), 6 N NaOH solution (3 ml) and again with water (3 ml), and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated and the residue was purified by column chromatography. This gave the product (70 mg) with a molecular weight of 165.2 g/mol (C10H15NO); MS (ESI): m/e=166 (M+H+).
