To a stirred solution of 3-[4-(2-chloroethyl)phenyl]-2-ethyl-5,7-dimethyl-3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (step 7, 2.8 g, 9.0 mmol) and KI (1.5 g, 9.0 mmol) in DMF (50 mL) was added sodium azide (1.2 g, 18.0 mmol), and then the resulting mixture was stirred overnight at 100° C. The reaction mixture was poured into water (100 mL), and extracted with ethyl acetate (100 mL). The organic layer was washed with water (50 mL) and brine (50 mL), then dried (Na2SO4). After removal of solvent, the crude product was purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel eluting with hexane/ethyl acetate (1:1) to afford 2.35 g (85%) of the title compound as white solids: 1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ 7.41 (2H, d, J=8.4 Hz), 7.35 (2H, d, J=8.4 Hz), 6.90 (1H, s), 3.59 (2H, t, J=7.1 Hz), 2.99 (2H, t, J=7.1 Hz), 2.83 (2H, q, J=7.6 Hz), 2.65 (3H, s), 2.52 (3H, s), 1.27 (3H, t, J=7.6 Hz).
