Procedure

A mixture of 2-{4-[5-(aminocarbonyl)-6-chloro-2-ethyl-1H-benzimidazol-1-yl]phenyl}ethyl methanesulfonate (step 1, 304 mg, 0.72 mmol), a solution of methyl amine (40% in methanol, 10 ml) and water (5 ml) in a sealed tube was heated overnight at 100° C. The reaction mixture was partitioned between dichloromethane (30 ml) and water (30 ml). The organic phase was separated and the aqueous phase was extracted with dichloromethane (50 ml). The combined organic phases were washed with brine (50 ml) and dried (Na2SO4). After removal of solvent, the crude product was purified by TLC with dichloromethane/methanol (10:1) to afford 154 mg (60%) of the title compound as yellow solids.
