8-Chloro-3-methoxy-2,5-dioxo-2,5-dihydro-1H-benz[b]azepine (0.5 g) was treated with 5 mL of phenethylamine, and the mixture was heated to 80° C. for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was filtered and the solid recrystallized from 5 mL hot dimethylformamide and water. The solid was filtered, washed (water) and vacuum dried (100° C., 15 Pa) to give the title compound (0.329 g); mp 284.4°-286.9° C.; NMR: 5.89 (s,1); MS: m/z=327(M+1). Analysis for C18H15ClN2 O2.0.2 H2O: Calculated: C, 65.44; H, 4.70; N, 8.48; Found: C, 65.42; H, 4.72; N, 8.62.
