Procedure

About 490 g (500 ml) of 40 percent aqueous tetra-n-butylammonium hydroxide solution (Fluka, D-7910 Neu-Ulm) were diluted with 700 ml of water, and 223.2 g (238.7 ml=1.07 mol of Si) of tetraethoxysilane were slowly added. The mixture was then stirred at room temperature for 24 hours. Thereafter, it was concentrated by distillation to 64.9 percent of the original total amount and the solution was crystallized at 4° C.
