24.8 g (0.1 mole) of decalindiol monomesylate (XI) in 1 1 of dimethylformamide were heated together with 65 g (1 mole) of sodium azide and 100 ml of water for 5 hours at 90°-100° C. After cooling, the mixture was poured into 2 1 of water and extracted with methyl tert-butyl ether, and the organic extracts were washed with sodium chloride solution, dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated down under reduced pressure.
