To a stirred mixture of (4-bromo-2-methoxycarbonylbenzyl)-triphenylphosphonium bromide (4) (34.2 g; 60.0 mmol), DBU (1,8-diazabicyclo(5.4.0) undec-5-ene; 20.1 g; 132 mmol), and 3-methoxy-2-methylbenzaldehyde (7.21 g; 48.0 mmol) in acetonitrile were heated at reflux temperature for 2 hours. The mixture was cooled and the solvent was evaporated. The residue was partitioned between water and ethyl acetate and the organic phase was washed with 0.1 N HCl, water, and brine. The solution was dried over MgSO4, filtered, and evaporated. The residue was crystallized from ethyl acetate and hexane to yield compound 5 (14.5 g; 84%).
