To 5-bromo-2-[2-(3-methoxy-2-methylphenyl)-vinyl]-benzoic acid methyl ester (5) (4.99 g; 13.8 mmol), stirring in ethyl alcohol (70 mL) and acetic acid (23 mL), was added PtO2 (0.075 g; 2.4%). The solution was stirred in a hydrogen atmosphere (balloon pressure) and the temperature of the solution was raised to 38° C. The reaction was monitored closely by TLC and the mixture was cooled after three hours. The reaction mixture was filtered and evaporated to give compound 6 as a residue. The residue was carried on to the next step without further purification.
