A mixture of 3-cyano-benzoic acid methyl ester (2 g, 12 mmol) and hydrazine monohydrate (0.60 mL, 12 mmol) in ethanol (10 mL) was stirred at room temperature overnight. The reaction mixture was concentrated and then the residue was triturated with diethyl ether to afford 3-cyano-benzoic acid hydrazide (1.02 g, 51%, pink solid). 1H NMR (DMSO) □ (ppm): 10.31 (s, 1H), 8.21 (m, 1H), 8.11 (m, 1H), 7.99 (m, 1H), 7.70 (m, 1H), 4.50 (s, 1H).
