Benzyl 2,5-dioxopyrrolidin-1-yl carbonate (1.36 g, 5.5 mmol) was added to a solution of (S)-1-(3-nitrophenyl)ethanamine HCl (1 g, 4.95 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (70 mL) and DIEA (2.2 mL, 12.4 mmol) and the reaction mixture was stirred for 1 h. The mixture was diluted with CH2Cl2 (100 mL), washed with NaHCO3, brine, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo to yield 59A (1.76 g, 99%) as a white solid. MS (ESI) m/z 323.02 (M+Na)+.
