To a mixture of 19.3 g of 4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-4-(2-benzofuryl)-benzofuran-7-ol in 400 mL of toluene was added 100 mg of p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate, and the mixture was placed on a Rotovap, and the solvent was distilled in vacuo (60° C.) until a residue was obtained. The residue was chromatographed on silica (hexane/methylene chloride 1.5:1) to afford 15.3 g (86%) of 6,7-dihydro-4-(2-benzofuryl)-benzofuran, (Formula Ill: R3 =H; ##STR53## R5 =2-benzofuryl) as an orange oil.
