Procedure

A mixture of 2.3 g of 10-methoxy-6-methylbenzo[b]quinolizinium perchlorate in 35 mL of 48% HBr was heated at 100° C. for 14 h, cooled to room temperature, and was diluted with water. The resulting mixture was heated to dissolve the solid product, filtered while hot, and the filtrate was treated with 20 g of sodium perchlorate. The precipitated solid product was filtered, washed with ether, air dried to afford 2 g (90.9%) of 10-hydroxy-6-methyl-benzo[b]quinolizinium perchlorate (Formula II: R1 =H; R2 =CH3 ; R7 =10--OH; X- --ClO4-), m.p. 246°-248° C. (d).
