A mixture of 1-methoxybenzo[b]quinolizinium perchlorate (1.4 g; 6.1 mmol) in 30 ml of 48% HBr was heated at 100° C. for 16 hour. The reaction mixture was poured into 100 ml of water and 50 ml of sodium perchlorate was added with stirring. The resulting solid was filtered and dried to afford 1.6 g (88.8%) of 1-hydroxybenzo[b]quinolizinium perchlorate (Formula II: R1 =1--OH; R2 =R3 =H; X- =ClO4-) as a solid.
