30 ml of 50% by volume aqueous dimethylamine were added to a solution of 19.68 g of 2-[2-(4-phenylbutyl)phenoxymethyl]oxirane [prepared as described in step (a) above] in 300 ml of tetrahydrofuran, and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. At the end of this time, the solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure, and the pale yellow oily residue was purified by column chromatography through silica gel, using a 10:1 by volume mixture of methylene chloride and methanol as the eluent, to give 20.6 g (yield 90.4%) of the title compound as a colorless oil.
