Procedure
5 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane were added to a solution of 1.00 g of 3-dimethylamino-1-{2-[4-(3-methoxymethoxyphenyl)butyl]phenoxy}-2-propanol [prepared as described in step (b) above] in 10 ml of methylene chloride, and the resulting mixture was allowed to stand at room temperature for 15 minutes. At the end of this time, the reaction mixture was concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure, and the resulting residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate and then allowed to stand. The crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration and dried in vacuo, to give 0.87 g (yield 89%) of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 124°-125° C.
