Following a procedure similar to that described in Example 17(c), 500 mg of 1-{2-[4-(2-chlorophenyl)butyl]phenoxy}-3-dimethylamino-2-propanol [prepared as described in step (b) above] were converted to the hydrochloride by passing it through a column packed with CM Sephadex C-25 (H+ type). The crude product was purified as described in Example 17(c), to give 398 mg (yield 72%) of the title compound as a colorless oil.
